Animal of the Day - 12.28.2010

Here is one of two alligators that were rescued by my mother's co-workers. The pair were named Ike and Gustav after the hurricanes that orphaned them (I don't recall which one this is). I meant to get recent pictures when I was out of town last week but never got around to it. Next time I'm down there I'll get new pictures and hopefully a video of me getting bitten by one of them.

I hope you all are (still) having a good end of the year. Things will still be busy for me for the next week, but I'm going to start visiting all of you lovely people starting tonight. Not you personally, just the blogs you have created.

Merry Christmas

Usually I try to have some pictures that are somewhat related to what's going on (like holidays) but without being too kitsch or banal or painfully thoughtless. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to do that this week. I could easily walk outside my room right now and take a photo of one of the cats playing with an ornament that is hanging from a beautifully lit tree. But why now?

On our trip into town to see family, my griflriend and I stopped to get something to eat and use the restrooms. When we parked in the parking lot we noticed this worn down and abandoned house about 40 meters away.

I stare at it intently and say, "I've got to get pictures of this for....."

"For your blog?" my girlfriend interrupted.

Which was then confronted by my retort, "Yes. My blog. And because it's beautiful.

Which it was.

So we went in for a snack, used the restrooms, then I went over to this house to take a few pictures. Unfortunately by the time I got there the sunlight was leaving in a hurry so they didn't turn out that well. My instincts started to bring me closer to the house, wanting to find a way in and see what I could discover. Or what could discover me. But alas, we were losing time and had to make it to our destination while already being 2 hours behind.

But I promised I would return to this house with better lighting and a better camera. It winked at me, then gave a slight nod.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

Animal of the Day - 12.23.2010

Today's animal comes to us from Rorschach (thank you again). Yes, two posts in a row with material from that guy. I sometimes have a hard time finding stuff to post (or just get bored with all of my pictures and want to give up), so if I send some money or a few Kit Kat bars his way he'll provide me with some nice original content.

1 point for anyone who finds the animal.

10 points for anyone who identifies the animal.

Random Photo of the Day - 12.21.2010

This random photo comes from good ol' Rorschach from Rorschach Redemption.

I love this photo for many reasons. 1) Aside from looking amazing from all the elements in the actual picture, this is actually a picture of what was once a canal lock. Technically it still is a canal lock, but something tells me it isn't getting much use anymore.

A canal lock in work. Also a horse with a hat?

2) This photo invokes many thoughts/feelings/memories. Rorschach says that, "Despite being an adult he can pretend those gates lead into some post apocalyptic world / wasteland a la the Book of Eli or Fallout." I agree 100%. Having just replayed Half-Life 2 a few months ago it reminds me of the very long "canal system" stage of the game. I think some of the graffiti in the picture actually says "Beware of Head Crabs." But that could be referring to something completely different.

I hope all of you are having a great holiday. I'm currently out of town visiting my family and some of my girlfriend's family. It's been fun and crazy. I'll be catching up with some of you as time allows, so don't think I'm neglecting you.

Animal of the Day - 12.15.10

Dot (left) and Poppy (right), with flowers.

I went to a birthday dinner for my best friend last night, had a very good time. The five of us drank 3 bottles of wine, which was nice. None of us overdid it, it was just the right amount actually. Got him a signed VHS copy of Coven. If you don't know about Coven, why not kill two bird hunters with one stone and watch one of the best documentaries ever made - American Movie

I said I needed to organize all my pictures to make this easier for me, but I never did. I'll soon have a better system for it all and hopefully that'll bring about some much needed changes for this little blog.

Some things to look forward to this week: some wonderful pictures from Rorschach as well as some more rescue animal pictures from ma mére.

Animal of the Day - 12.13.2010

A roly poly/pill bug/armadillidiidae I found on the floor. Before putting it back outside I took this picture. If this has been posted before, I apologize. I really need to sort through all my pictures.

I haven't made my usual rounds or posted anything in the past few days, kind of a busy weekend. It's the holiday season, so it's to be expected. I'm back, though. Hope you all had a good weekend.

Random Photo of the Day - 12.10.10

This picture was taken at Park Güell, in Barcelona, a garden complex designed by famous architect Antoni Gaudi. While waiting to take a picture of the entrance/fountain without any people in the way I noticed this guy standing next to me posing for his own picture. So I decided I'd take one for him myself. He even gave me a little smile.

Animal of the Day - 12.09.10

Out of all the pictures I took while in Italy this is one of my favorites. This was taken in Assisi.

Random Photo of the Day - 12.08.10

Some graffiti in Gavinana, Italy. It reads:

I honestly didn't remember where I took this picture. It's a good thing whoever wrote this decided to put a reminder at the bottom. Thanks, random Italian who replaced "A" with "E" in "YENKEE!"

Random Photo of the Day - 12.07.10

What the heck is this? One day I put a packet of grape Kool-Aid in a water bottle and put it in the freezer (slushy grape Kool-Aid is great). Unfortunately I left it in for too long and it completely froze. I took it out, put it on the counter, and gave it some time to thaw. I didn't know there was a crack in the water bottle and that colored water was leaking out onto the counter and underneath a loaf of bread. The stains you see in these pictures are just that. You can see all the wrinkles caused by the plastic covering the loaf of bread. If you see anything in this image feel free to head over to Rorschach Redemption and tell him all about it (he loves long emails - even if it has only mentions what snack foods you like). Be sure and tell 'em Large Marge sent ya.

Animal of the Day - 12.06.10

I hope you all had a good weekend. Here are some snails that I saw outside a couple weeks ago.

Cute + Funny =

Don't know the answer to that equation? The answer is a French Bulldog taking on a doorstop.

My sister-in-law sent me this because of my fascination and obsession and love for French Bulldogs (thank you!). It's the second most cutest thing I've seen in the past month. Hope you all have a decent Friday.
