Animal of the Day - 1.31.2011

This dude lives at the Dallas World Aquarium. I was there this past weekend for my dad's birthday (Happy Birthday again, Dad). I don't know exactly what this is, so 10 points to the person who correctly identifies it.

In other news, my girlfriend and I got in last night to a drunken lady trying to catch her cat that got out. Being the animal whisperer I am I asked if she needed help getting her cat. Please note at this point I had no idea she was drunk. Her reply to me was, "[mean look] Ohhh, sure. After chasing it off five times. [awkward pause] Ya know, I have to get up in the morning. So please just let me have this moment."

What a belligerent bitch she was. I spent the next 40 minutes watching tv (catching up with the NHL All Star game) and would occasionally hear her yell the cat's name. I looked outside and saw her pathetic drunk ass sitting on the stairs with her head between her legs. When the coast was clear of her I went out to feed a stray cat that's been around. When I did this the cat of the drunk lady came up to me. I pet it, and it then ran inside of MY place! I was afraid the lush was watching and would freak out thinking I'm trying to steal her cat. Luckily her cat was very friendly, so I picked it up and walked around for about five minutes trying to find this bitch to give her the cat back. Despite her being a dumb and mean drunk I can't let anyone go off thinking they lost their pet. So I stayed outside in the cold walking around hoping she would pop up again.

Finally she came back out with cat food and a flash light. I think she had forgotten she was rude to me. She thanked me for returning her cat to her and went on telling me the story of how she got the cat, how she thinks the cat is pregnant, and all sorts of other cat-related things. So in the end at least the cat got back to her owner.

Neglect

I was out of town this past weekend visiting family with my girlfriend. Saturday night when we pulled into the driveway of my parent's house I noticed my girlfriend reading comments posted here by some of you. Normally I don't ever go back to my own posts. That especially holds true when I'm trying something funny in one of them. It's kind of like I'll put a joke out there and then be too afraid to check back to see if anyone gets it. My girlfriend said I was afraid of the rejection of someone not getting one of my jokes or my humor. I guess that's true.

But what I really felt is that I've neglected some very funny comments or questions (ones that we were both laughing at as we sat in the car reading them) from you all on past posts. So I've decided to go back to every post made this year and reply to or comment on all the ones I neglected.

Random Photo of the Day - 1.21.2011

I have a deep love of desserts. I find them fun, interesting, and tasty. I'm one of those people who looks forward to dessert more than any other part of a meal. I'm always looking for new and inventive treats to try out. My last great find was a vanilla tofu mousse at Nobu.

So when Bravo announced they were adding a new version of Top Chef that features pastry chefs I was excited. What came out of that was Top Chef Just Desserts. Unfortunately watching the show was very painful, I had to tell myself to keep watching to see all the new and inventive desserts that were going to come out of it. I know it's a reality show, but if any of you saw it you'll know what I mean.

With this season they had a Godiva Quickfire challenge where the chefs had to create four different chocolates that represented different milestones in their life, with the winner having their pieces reproduced and sold by Godiva. In the end it was Morgan Wilson who created the winning set.

So how does this fit in with the Random Photo of the Day? Well, for Christmas a friend of mine got me a box of them. And I was happy. So I decided to open up the box, take pictures of them, and eat them. Here they are:

Moment of Love

Dark chocolate ganache layered with an açaí, rose and berry ganache, in a dark chocolate shell decorated with a red heart.

This piece pays homage to his former marriage with the bittersweet flavor representing the marriage ending and the açaí representing his ex-wife's Brazilian heritage.

The first bite of this was an overload of açaí, that's all I tasted. A second bite was the same but with a lingering taste of dark chocolate.

Moment of Passion

White chocolate and passion fruit ganache in a white chocolate shell.

This piece represents Morgan's time spent at The California Culinary Academy where he found his passion for pastry.

This was a good piece of chocolate. The passion fruit blended so well with the white chocolate. Throughout eating it the flavor of passion fruit and white chocolate were taking turns over which one should get more attention.

Moment of Joy

Matcha tea mousse center in a white chocolate shell decorated with green stringing.

Moment of Joy represents the birth of Morgan's son, whose middle name is Zen. Apparently when he thinks of Zen he thinks green tea. I agree.

I absolutely love anything with matcha powder or flavoring. My all time favorite dessert is a green tea ice cream cake, which this kind of reminds me of. The white chocolate is subtle compared to the very strong, but smooth, flavor of the matcha mousse.

Moment of Accomplishment

Dark chocolate ganache in between two dark chocolate disks, topped with bits of organic dried apricot, tart cherry, and sea salt.

This piece is a chocolate translation of Morgan's journey on Top Chef and the many flavors he used along the way.

For anyone who likes dark chocolate this piece is a winner. The only thing making this worthy of being in this box are the two different forms of dark chocolate accompanied by the three different toppings, which go very well with the chocolate - which is everything.

I'll be out of town for the next few days, so I'll see you all on Monday. Have a great weekend!

Random Photo of the Day - 1.18.2010

Can you find the item that doesn't belong?
This Random Photo of the Day comes from Mr. Piss Pig himself, Rorschach. What I'm wondering is what is this even doing in a Babies R Us store??

Vegetarian French Bulldog

Ok so a French Bulldog eating cabbage doesn't make it a vegetarian, but I'm sure it'd still be my friend. I also make those noises when I eat. Must be a veggie thing. Another great French Bulldog video find from my wonderful sister-in-law.

Animal of the Day - 1.12.2010

I pulled up to this big guy at a stop light. I didn't even notice him at first until I saw a big head pop up next to me and stare. As soon as I took the picture the light turned green. Thanks for the pose, serious dog.

Thank you for the well-wishes yesterday. This will be day 6 of my stomach virus. Shirley I'll be better soon.

Random Photo - 1.11.11

Don't mess with this guy

Sorry I've been away again. Right as I was getting back into the swing of things I get hit with a stomach virus. So, bear with me while I get back in the process once this nasty bug is gone.

These are two gifts I got for Christmas. Part of the Lego Architecture series. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the John Hancock Center. I haven't messed with Legos in many, many years. So that along with my love for design and architecture made these wonderful gifts. They were very easy to put together, so to make it last longer I made sure every Lego piece was facing the same way (according to the tiny Lego name printed on the pegs of each piece).

To show the scale of the Guggenheim I took a picture of it next to a wooden dog artist's model.

If that isn't a good enough representation of the scale, I took a picture of the dog and the Guggenheim next to Wanderlei Silva.

And if that weren't enough, I took a picture of the dog, the Guggenheim, and Wanderlei next to a Shy Guy.

And if that picture is too boring for you, I took this one.

Animal of the Day - 1.5.2011

This is a gecko I saw one night hanging out in the leftovers of some bird food I put out.

The holidays are well over and I'm finally recovering from them all, mentally and physically. I'll see you all soon.
